Transformations That Inspire: Before & After

Educate

At Concept Zero Architects, our residential transformation projects turn outdated spaces into modern homes. We celebrate the art of transformation by showcasing some of our most successful residential projects. From outdated spaces to stunning modern homes, these transformations highlight our design choices and the challenges we faced along the way.

The Cedars
Featured Project 1: Transforming a …

Before: A cramped kitchen with outdated appliances and limited counter space.

After: An efficient kitchen with sleek cabinetry, modern appliances, and an island that doubles as a dining area. A more connected and functional space with views to the outside. A contemporary extension that maximises spaces for a growing family.

Design Insights: The addition of an island not only increased counter space but also created a social hub for family gatherings. We chose durable materials that balance aesthetics and functionality.

Challenges: Maximising storage in a small kitchen was a challenge. We utilised vertical space with custom cabinets and creative storage solutions to optimise the layout.

These residential transformation projects highlight the creative solutions we employ to overcome design challenges.

Middle Barn Farm
Featured Project 2: Transforming a 1980’s Barn Conversion

Before: Middle Barn Farm was originally converted in the 1980s. It featured small windows and a lack of natural light. The layout was compartmentalized and disconnected from its stunning surroundings. Expansive gardens and a tranquil stream were underutilized. Inside, the space felt dark and lacked flow.

After: We completely transformed the barn into a bright, modern home. A striking new extension with full-height glazing creates a seamless connection to the outdoors. Natural light now floods the interiors, and garden views take center stage. The ground floor was reconfigured to include an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. The first floor features a luxurious master suite, complete with an en-suite bathroom and dressing room.

Design Insights: Our focus was on enhancing the connection between the home and its natural surroundings. We used natural materials to complement the barn’s character. Contemporary glazing added a modern edge while preserving the original charm.

Challenges: Integrating modern design into a traditional structure was key. We addressed the lack of natural light and improved the flow between spaces.

This project showcases the creative solutions we deliver to overcome design challenges. The result is a home that feels connected, light, and functional.

Stoughton Drive North
Featured Project 3: Transforming a Victorian property with charming historical details but an outdated layout that lacked modern functionality.

Before: The flow between spaces was limited, and the outbuilding was underutilised, reducing the home’s versatility and potential.

After: The property underwent a full refurbishment, including an internal reconfiguration to enhance spatial flow and a rear extension to increase living space. The outbuilding was converted into a self-contained annex, providing additional, independent living space. The design combined contemporary elements with the original Victorian character, improving both functionality and sustainability.

Design Insights: Sustainability was a key focus, with eco-friendly upgrades integrated seamlessly while preserving the home’s historical aesthetic. The internal reconfiguration improved spatial flow, creating more functional living spaces. The outbuilding conversion maximised its potential, offering versatile living options. A mix of modern materials like green tiles, wood, and brass accents blended contemporary comfort with traditional charm.

Challenges: Balancing historical preservation with modern updates required careful attention to detail. The project faced constraints related to sustainability and the need to work within existing structural limitations. Internal reconfiguration and gaining permissions for the rear extension and outbuilding conversion presented additional obstacles.
